Position Summary
REAL-R is seeking a Master Electrician to provide technical leadership, permit responsibility, and field oversight for the installation, verification, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm and life safety electrical systems.
This role ensures all work complies with the Alberta Safety Codes Act, Canadian Electrical Code, Alberta Building Code, and Alberta Fire Code, with a strong focus on safety, compliance, and quality workmanship.

Key Responsibilities
Act as the designated Master Electrician, holding responsibility for electrical permits and code compliance
Oversee installation, alteration, and maintenance of fire alarm systems and life safety electrical systems
Supervise and support journeypersons and apprentices, ensuring safe and compliant field execution
Interpret and apply the Canadian Electrical Code, Alberta Building Code, and Alberta Fire Code
Install, inspect, troubleshoot, and verify fire alarm systems and related low-voltage life safety circuits
Perform or oversee fire alarm system programming, testing, commissioning, and verification
Conduct inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of fire alarm and emergency systems
Review electrical drawings, specifications, and engineered documents for code compliance
Complete accurate documentation including permits, test reports, and electronic work orders
Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and on-site leadership to field teams
Coordinate with clients, contractors, engineers, inspectors, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs)
Participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and incident investigations
Stay current with updates to electrical and fire safety codes and industry standards
Required Qualifications
Valid Alberta Master Electrician certification (Safety Codes Council)
Alberta Journeyperson Electrician (Red Seal or equivalent)
Minimum 10 years of post-journeyperson experience
Strong experience with fire alarm and life safety electrical systems
In-depth knowledge of CEC, Alberta Building Code, and Alberta Fire Code
Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence with clean driving record
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical specifications
Experience supervising apprentices or field teams
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of dedicated fire alarm system experience (testing, verification, troubleshooting, programming)
CFAA certification or manufacturer-specific training
Experience with emergency lighting, exit signage, and suppression systems
Experience in healthcare, high-rise, or industrial environments
Basic computer skills (MS Office, reporting tools, PDF systems)
Skills & Competencies
Strong troubleshooting skills for fire alarm panels and life safety systems
Knowledge of safe electrical practices including LOTO and arc flash safety
Strong organization and ability to manage multiple permits and projects
Excellent communication skills with clients, inspectors, and internal teams
Leadership mindset focused on mentoring and safety culture
Working Conditions
Field-based role across Alberta
Work in commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-residential environments
Physical work including standing, climbing ladders, working at heights, and lifting up to 50–70 lbs
Occasional evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations as required
